Class 7 MOT tests for commercial vehicles

Vehicles older than 3 years need an annual MOT test to confirm their road safety. While personal-use cars and small vans fall under the Class 4 MOT test, light commercial vehicles with a weight between 3 and 3.5 tonnes require a Class 7 test.

It’s also important to note that motorhomes weighing up to 3.5 tonnes are categorised under Class 4.

Class 7 MOT FAQs

What is a Class 7 MOT?

Class 7 MOTs are designed for medium commercial vehicles, between 3 and 3.5 tonnes in weight, to evaluate their roadworthiness.

While they are similar to Class 4 tests, Class 7 MOTs pay additional attention to ensure the tyres can handle the vehicle’s load and that brakes performance is sufficient.

Is a Class 7 MOT necessary for my vehicle?

Medium commercial vehicles require a Class 7 MOT. These vehicles typically weigh between 3 to 3.5 tonnes, encompassing larger vans like the Ford Transit, Mercedes Sprinters and Vauxhall Movanos. In contrast, smaller vehicles or vans generally need a Class 4 MOT.

If you’re uncertain about your vehicle’s weight, you should be able to find that information in your handbook or V5C registration document.

It’s crucial to obtain the correct MOT based on your vehicle’s weight. If you need any advise about your vehicle, please give us a call 01778 424 639.

What if my vehicle doesn’t pass?

It’s a situation no one enjoys. Should this happen, you have a few options. If your current MOT still has time, you can drive until its expiry provided the vehicle is safe. Prompt repairs are advisable.

If your current MOT has expired, driving is restricted to a garage for repairs or to a Class 7 MOT testing station for a retest. Driving anywhere else risks invalidating your insurance.
