MOT FAQs
When is my MOT test due?
To find out if your vehicle has a valid MOT and when your next MOT test is due, check out the Government portal and enter your vehicle registration number.
Alternatively, you could find your current MOT certificate and look for an expiry date.
The MOT can be completed on the vehicle at any time before the expiry date but in order to preserve your existing expiry date, you will need to take your MOT test up to 1 month (minus a day) before it runs out. So, if your MOT runs out on 9th July, the earliest date you can have your MOT test and keep the same renewal date for next year will be 10th June.
How early can you do an MOT?
There are certain rules about how early you can take your car for its annual MOT test.
The inspection can be carried out up to 28 days before the expiry date shown on your previous MOT certificate. This means that, if you take your vehicle for its test 28 days before the expiry, your MOT will essentially be valid for 13 months. You won’t lose any days by taking the car early.
For example, if your MOT certificate expires on the 9th July, you can take the car for its next test between the 10th June and 8th July. The new certificate would then be valid until the 8th July of the following year.
Do electric vehicles need an MOT?
Just like cars with petrol and diesel engines, electric vehicles and hybrid vehicles both still require a valid MOT certificate if they are 3 years old or more. The main difference is that electric vehicles do not require an emissions test, therefore this part of the MOT test is omitted.
Our MOT station is equipped and capable of carrying out MOT testing for hybrid and electric cars although some vehicle exclusions may apply including Tesla models currently. Please give us a call for more details.
Can I drive if my MOT has expired?
Without a current MOT certificate, you will be unable to drive your vehicle lawfully or renew your road tax.
The penalty for not having a valid MOT certificate is a fine of up to £1,000. If your car has failed the an MOT test and is deemed as ‘dangerous’, by driving this vehicle you could get a fine of up to £2,500 and 3 points on your licence. For your car to be classed as dangerous following its MOT test, it either poses an immediate risk to road safety or has a serious impact on the environment due to its emissions.
What’s the difference between a Class 4 and a Class 7 MOT?
A Class 4 MOT is the most common one. It’s the standard MOT that’s carried out on passenger cars and small vans.
A Class 7 MOT is similar, except it’s used for private and commercial vehicles weighing between 3 and 3.5 tonnes.
